Finally watched OUaT

I have thoughts, they have probably already been said, but I still want/need to share them.

I was disappointed with the episode. Not because the story wasn’t good, but because it wasn’t executed well. I know what they were trying to portray. Regina was an abused child, who found real love, but was “betrayed” and thus lost her love which in turn made her evil. However, this wasn’t shown properly! The only way I really got this was because of the acting, not the actual story arc or the dialogue. Ask yourself this, why is it that Ruby (who is a wolf and actually killed a WHOLE bunch of people) gets all the sympathy, but Regina doesn’t? Because Ruby doesn’t control it and Regina supposedly does. However, she doesn’t. She is not in control of her hate. THAT is what this episode was supposed to prove. Imagine how much pain she must have felt and been through, growing up with an abusive mother and a father who let it all happen (frankly, it’s the stuff serial killers are made off). All of that pain can quite easily turn into uncontrollable anger. The moment she lost that control was when Snow told her she had shared her secret with the one person she fears the most and had thus “betrayed” her. Lana acted this perfectly (and in some of the reviews that I’ve read this is what is picked up upon), but the story that came before wasn’t good enough.

This is all my opinion of course, but I truly wish it has been done better. This episode hit very close to home and maybe that’s why I felt it so strongly. I have experienced that transference of anger and trust me, it can go entirely unnoticed. Here are some random thoughts on the episode.

  • That scene between Regina and Mary Margaret was some powerful shit man. Jeez! When Regina stroked her face and then grabed it and revealed that she knew Mary Margaret hasn’t killed Kathryn. BAM. Acting genius. On both sides. It rivaled the Mr. Gold/Regina jail scene, which I still say is the best scene of this show.
  • August is Henry grown up. Right? I mean, look at how he looks at Emma! With so much admiration… I really need to stop speculating on this show.
  • Ginnifer Goodwin is frakking awesome. So are Jennifer and Lana. The three of them in that scene where Mary Margaret is questioned by the DA? Good stuff.
  • Regina’s indignant attitude in the scene with the shovel is just so funny! She like “Moi!? Never!”. Even though everybody knows that she did do it. Lol.
  • Mr. Gold. You conniving bastard. I still say you’re the true source of evil.
  • Was I the only one that never even for a second thought Kathryn was dead? I don’t know, I was just never actually concerned, I knew she’d turn back up.

Anyway, long post is long. Lemme reblog some awesome gifs now!

Anonymous asked: Do you think it's possible they could make swanqueen happen or is it just fairytales?

I think anything is possible. In television, definitely. I also think it wouldn’t be out of left field, cause the set up is there. For sure. Only true love’s kiss can break the curse? I mean come on.

Do I think they’ll actually let it happen. I am sceptical. Very sceptical. The track record is not very good here. However, they could easily, easily make it happen. Imagine if they did! The endless possibilities for love and redemption and novelty and good story-telling. Gosh, it would make a so far slightly mediocre show with good actors, brilliant. In my opinion of course. I have several scenarios in my head in which it could work nicely, lol.

So, is it a fairytale? No. Is it a possibility? We can all dream, right?

1st scene, me: “Finally! See? Regina loves Henry! She IS a good mom! FU haters, I was right!”

2nd scene, me: “Of course they had to have Emma out-mom Regina. Of course. FU show!”

So many things wrong with these scenes…

1st: Henry, how about a little gratitude and compassion for the mother who is trying to make you smile… with a video game that as it turns out, you absolutely love! Who clearly feels terrible about your book being lost? Who you still don’t believe she didn’t destroy it on purpose or even got it from the super-secret hiding place?

2nd: What should’ve happened when Henry got his book back: “I guess mom was telling the truth after all, about not having the book…”

What we got instead: “Great! Operation Cobra [in which we destroy my mother, who has just given me a video game that I love and has been completely exonerated of all blame regarding the lost book] can resume!!”

Seriously show? Seriously?

This is really starting to bother me about the show, especially considering how hard Regina works for her happy ending (especially with regards to her relationship with Henry) and how Emma seems to get good things literally because she asked for them (birthday wish, finding the book).

It comes down to the Show vs. Tell thing. We’re told that Regina is evil/bad/wrong/awful/horrible but shown a flawed person who is desperately trying to hold on what matters to her. We’re told that Emma is good/wholesome/awesome/right, but her choices rarely show that.

Heroism is not simply being nice to people it’s easy to be nice to. It’s also about making hard choices — taking real risks and making real sacrifices — because it’s the right thing to do.

The only time Emma makes a real decision that reveals heroism is in episode 1x08 (“Desperate Souls”), where she risked herself to save her nemesis because it’s the right thing to do. It would have been easy for her to walk away, but she didn’t. Wait, I forgot episode 1x05 (“That Still, Small Voice”) where she volunteers to be lowered into the mine to get Henry, not the least because she empathizes with Regina of all people and truly responded to her plea for help.

Funny how in both cases where Emma shows what she’s made of, it’s when she does something for Regina.

I want to see Emma making real choices between Dumbledore says “what is right and what is easy.”

I’m not asking for Emma to be perfect or without flaws. Hello, my favorite character is Regina! But I need to see more complexity and more awareness when it comes to the choices she makes.

For me, the biggest problem I have with this show is the inherent judgments it makes on parenting. I remember listening to a commentary on one of the LOST dvds and the showrunners said that one of their biggest themes was “parents”. Small wonder, then, that OUaT features that largely in its outlook.

I keep going back to one of the first episodes when Regina tells Emma that she “changed every diaper, tended to every scraped knee”. Regina’s done all the work in making Henry a little person, you know? She’s done the parenting thus far.

We’re supposed to believe that she’s a terrible parent, but I just don’t see this. We’re supposed to believe that blood bonds are greater than the adoptive bonds between Regina and Henry. But he’s a little person now, with his own thoughts and feelings and views and personality. And who engendered that? Not Emma, that’s for sure.

I think I’m preternaturally disposed to dislike Emma because she’s taking the word of a ten year old child over Regina. And yes, I’m aware that Regina’s the Evil Queen, but in this world, she’s also a mother. And she’s trying. I feel like Emma hasn’t really done that much thus far to be a parent. It makes me a little resentful, not to mention the harmful and pernicious ideas about adoption that it raises.

I want Emma to make good choices. I want her to be a hero. But not like this, with secretive meetings and outdoing Regina as a mother.

Being a parent is really difficult. The reason I’m not one is because I just don’t feel I have much to offer a child. Yet. And perhaps I’ll adopt one day or even have my own children. I don’t know. But I want to be that child’s hero. I want to make good choices and “do the right thing”.

I want Emma to do that too.

You guys give me all kinds of feelings. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

I gotta cut in on this and agree with everything that has been said. I know we all have a love for Regina, so it could be said that our judgement is clouded and perhaps it is. However, that is clearly besides the point in this issue here.

From day one I have had a massive dislike for Henry. As was said above, it’s the difference between what we are shown and what we told. We are told Regina is evil, by many people, but mainly Henry. What we are shown is a mother who is strict and controlling, but loves her son. How that translates in my mind? Regina is the mother and Emma is the cool aunt. The aunt who gets to come in from out of town, do cool stuff with him, be on Henry’s side and generally just pander to his ideas. Naturally this is overcompensation from Emma’s side, but what is overlooked is the message that this sends. Namely that adoption is bogus and blood relations is all that matters. Emma is Henry’s real parent, therefore he loves her, Regina is not, therefore he doesn’t.

For very personal reasons, I have an extreme problem with this, a massive, huge one. Yes, yes, the evil queen is evil and yes, yes, Regina does evil things, but as I have said before, until we are specifically shown otherwise, none of those things have envolved Henry. And why would they, all that we have been shown is Regina who is a mother and who loves her son. The fact that the creators like to focus on “parents” only makes it that much worse! At the end of the day, the truth of the matter is that parents aren’t always heroes. To small children maybe, but as those children grow up, they resist against what they’ve always known to be their main source of authority, which is their parents. Parents are flawed and do the best they can, blood related or not. If this is some kind of twisted way of implying the book represents Henry’s impending puberty, they are going about it in a fucked up way.

My point is and what it has always been, is that Henry’s character makes NO sense to me. He is the catalyst of this story, yet nothing he does seems to fit. He only thinks his mother is evil because of a book!? I get that he has a big imagination and I understand that he hero-worships Emma, THOSE things I understand. His continual refusal and dismissal of Regina as his mother, I do not. I simply can not believe that a child who was raised by a single mother, no matter how strict, would behave that way towards their parent. Because lets not forget that nothing has shown us that she has ever done anything to Henry, there is no canon evidence for this, so where.does.the.attitude.come.from!?

OUaT Thoughts

I absolutely loved this episode. Here are some reasons why.

  • Beauty and the Beast is my favourite Disney story. I don’t know about the fairytale because I simply haven’t read everything about it, but I would say it will always reside in the top 3 for me. Making Rumpelstiltskin the Beast was ingenious and I actually greatly enjoyed how it worked in the confides of the show. Even better is how they worked it out. Here is one instance where the fairytale world mirrored the Storybrooke world, I wonder what the significance of that will be…
  • I gotta be honest though, Emilie de Ravin does nothing for me. No matter who they would’ve gotten I would never have liked her as Belle, but the poor girl truly is no match for Robert Carlyle.
  • There was minimal Henry. I am sorry, but in my book that always make for a better episode.
  • Emma showed up with her awesome WTF face again and actually did really well being the Sheriff. The scene with all the girls in the dinner, Ashley, Ruby, Mary Margaret and Emma was a great showcase for female comradery. Now if only it wasn’t only over men. I do hope they show more of those friendships.
  • Mary Margaret really is an amazing character. Seeing the happiness of a couple that can be together freely hurt her so visibly. She does deserve better and I love that she knows that, but she also can not stay away from David. For now, this conflict is still working well for me.
  • The scene between Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin and Regina in the jail was by far the best scene this show has shown us. Lana and Robert act the shit out of every scene they are in, but put them together and you get some mighty fine television. We now also know that Mr. Gold is fully aware of what is going on. The plot thickens and twists. Good stuff!
  • Speaking of little Miss Evil, I know she is my absolute favourite so I am biased, but this episode only highlighted why Regina Mills is the best character on this show. The more evil she gets, the more I love her and the more I want to know about her. I won’t go into it too much, cause really I could write a book on this character, but her face throughout this whole episode was magnificent. She concocted a little plan and it worked and she revelled in her victory. Quite a sight to see. Also, can I be that nurse?

The main thing for me with this episode was that the plot was actually really interesting. The introduction of Belle and the character arc of Rumpelstiltskin was the main plot of this episode, but none of the other characters were forgotten and almost all the plotlines were advanced. OUaT has shown potential to be a great show, but this is the first time (IMO) it was actually displayed throughout the entire episode.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall

I could never ever hate Regina. Not even at all.

Here is what I do not understand about Once Upon A Time; it operates under the assumption that the Evil Queen is the source of all the misery in Storybrooke and that Regina Mills IS the Evil Queen, however the people in the town do not know this and therefore go about their lives as usual. Correct? Then why do most of them treat Regina the way they do?

I’ll put it under the cut, cause I may have gone on a bit. Included are my thoughts on the latest episode.

Clearly, her [Regina’s] abandonment issues are just as deep-seated as Emma’s, even if she tries to manage them in a different way; she clings too tightly to try and keep people close, while Emma pushes them away so that they can’t hurt her by leaving somewhere down the line. For now, the pair are the perfect counterbalance for each other, but it seems that Regina is growing more desperate with every episode — I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until she tips her hand and gives Emma a solid reason to take her down.

Finally saw OUAT.

Thoughts?

  • Regina. Regina. Regina. Regina Mills. Madame Mayor. The Evil Queen. How can an entire episode about you trying to kill somebody make me love you even more. So much pain and anguish. Evil actions, evil deeds, tortured heart. That moment when Graham and Emma walked away from her in the woods, was amazing. I literally reached for the screen! So dramatic. I know some people feel strongly about seperating the Evil Queen from Regina and that may be true up until some point, but you can see the same pain in both their eyes. The only difference is Regina has learned to care again while the Evil Queen was still overcome with hatred. I loved it all. Lana Parrilla, you are fucking brilliant with your portrayal of this character.
  • Graham. Am I unhappy he is dead, nah. Am I happy, not really either. I never saw any truth in him, not untill the very end. Though, as I am realizing now as I am writing this was kind of the point, with him not having his heart and all. So yeah, well done show. But that also meant that in my eyes he had zero chemistry with both Emma and Regina. I’ll miss his pretty face though (he actually strongly reminds me of this waiter at a restaurant I frequent).
  • Emma Swan. Still going strong. To me, that is. She’s still the voice of reason in this whole thing. Her WTF face is beyond epic. When she saw the wolf over Graham’s shoulder, I actually laughed. Though I secretly loved her more when she was making it clear that she had no feelings for Graham and if I was going by her face I would have had to have believed her. So I don’t know what all those other characters were on about, lol. And hun, you don’t need a man to show you what love is. Trust me.
  • Snow White. We learned nothing more except more mystery and questions from you. She’s obviously more sympathetic to the Evil Queen then one might think. I can’t wait to learn more!!
  • That fight was epic. No bitch fight in sight. All fists baby!

Basically, I loved this episode. The special effects made me giggle a bit, but I liked it overal. Strong story, strong acting. My favorite combo. The preview for next week looks sick!

OUAT thoughts.

So, I actually quite liked this episode! Maybe it was because there was a lack of Henry? Either way, loved the twists and turns (Spoilers ahead!!)

  • I don’t know why everybody is upset about the Snow White and Prince Charming development… I mean, don’t get me wrong. I love them together, they have great chemistry and I want them to have a happy ending. However, don’t you want some angst? I love me some angst. Angst is good, angst usually leads to good storytelling. Also, this is Storybrooke. We know they get together as their true selves, but the Evil Queen didn’t cast that spell, just to have it broken so quickly. Personally, I am looking forward to what is ahead.
  • And Kathryn. I wonder what her story is. She did not look happy to be engaged to mister Prince Charming. How does that translate into Storybrooke. What is her background?
  • Prince Charming isn’t actually a Prince! He had a twin brother! THEY WERE ADOPTED. And here is a serious concern I have, this show needs to re-evaluate how they handle all this adoption stuff. I realize they have a story to construct and enact and what not, but adoption is not a ploy for evil do-ers. It’s a real thing and it’s close to a lot of people’s hearts. Lets try to treat it with some respect. Nevertheless, I wonder if David also has a twin… Hhmmmm.
  • Emma. Emma Swan. I kinda love you. You have a strong moral compass lady and it does you well. Please keep being awesome. Also, ditch the Sheriff. I know a lot of people think he is being manipulated by a certain Mayor, but he is a grown man who can make his own decision and I have the strong suspision that Emma agrees with me. However, we’ll soon learn more about him, which I think will do his character some good.
  • And Regina. My love. Your face when Kathryn said she was your friend, it broke my damn heart. Somebody give this woman a hug or whatever, cause goddamnit she’s obviously extremely messed up. Lashing out at everything. I am extremely excited about where they are taking this storyline, because it is looking to be pretty spectacular. And who did she loose??

One minor flaw in this episode? No Regina and Emma scenes. I figured there wouldn’t be any, cause they usually leak that stuff the moment they can, which I of course completely understand. However, I expect this to be rectified by the next episode power that be, thank you very much! Lol.

Thoughts on OUAT.

Episode 5. I finally saw it. It gave me many things, most of them feelings.

  • Snow White and Prince Charming. Mary Margaret Blanchard and David Nolan. It took about 5 episodes, but I totally get it now. They have great chemistry together and their pull towards each other is incredibly well played. Everybody knows they are going to end up together, but the fact that they are both so damn noble makes their obstacle in the form of Catherine Nolan actually believable. Good stuff.
  • Jiminy Cricket. Excuse me while I go barf in a bag. There is nothing that I hate more then a self righteous man who tries to tell others what to do in the name of redemption. So he is the conscious of the town? He wants to be a better man because he did a horrible thing, but he feels bad about it? Seems valid to me. Yet, how does he go about achieving this? Threatening to take away a woman’s son. Real convincing there dude. Just cause your face is all sad and droopy all the time, does not make you a “relatable” character.
  • Emma Swan continues to amaze me. She seems to have an incredible bullshit detector that she is not afraid to use. On anybody, not just Regina, as was evident with her calling out Mary Margaret on her slip up and barging in on “Dr. Hopper”. She also seems to be incredibly respectful of the fact that Henry is Regina’s son, but you can totally tell that she is getting attached and that she wants to be in his life. The hurt on her face when she was pushed away by Regina revealed a lot.
  • Henry, or kid (I love that). I still don’t like you. The best part in his storyline of this episode was the question that he kept being asked: why does he want to believe in this so bad? His answer was great, because there should be more. The kid’s a dreamer, he wants things. It kind of humanized him to be for the first time. I’ll be waiting for the episode where he starts questioning himself, cause he’s been pretty two dimensional so far, but that was the first time they gave him a little depth.
  • Last but not least. Can I please put on my riding gear, mount my trusty white steed, ride into that damn town, sweep the Madame Mayor into my arms and ride of with her into the sunset? Cause she seems to be becoming the character that everybody is supposed to hate and I am developing an undying love for with every passing of the episodes, that usually doesnt bode well. Regina Mills is not evil, she may have a serious attitude problem, but she’s not evil in the basic sense. Not even the Evil Queen is that anymore, the second episode took care of that. No, this is a character who fights tooth and nail for what she wants and what she thinks is right, but really all she needs is for somebody to see past all that, stand up to her and touch her heart. (Yes I have my ideas about this, but I won’t go into too much :P).
